Give and Take

Lime, gypsum, ink, soil, seeds, branches, moss.

From the ancient Bloedsteen, Hoogendijk created three replicas and stacked them on top. The contemporary versions, in contrasting pastel hues derived from natural ingredients, are made of porous materials where seeds, spores, mosses, and plants can take root, and small animals and organisms can feed. Rain, wind, sun, grazing, erosion, and touch gradually transform the artwork’s color and form, while simultaneously nurturing new life. Essentially, Hoogendijk provides the foundational conditions, and nature creates the artwork—one that will never be complete, as it exists in a cyclical process of growth, bloom, decay, and renewal. In this natural process, we become aware of time—not linear, but cyclical. And that is hopeful.

Climb up

For Climb Up, created for Triënnale Alkmaar, I drew inspiration from the movement of residents, the city’s expansion, and nature’s retreat. The artwork grows and changes throughout the exhibition, making its original framework harder to see—just like a city becoming more crowded. After the Triënnale, I harvest the piece and use it to create something new.

Grasswork 3

Five metal triangles covered parts of the grass at Buitenplaats Doornburgh. By moving them, grasses and other vegetation alternated, creating a drawing—a pattern in the grass.

Graswerk

Door het tijdelijk afdekken van gras verstikte het gras en ontstond een patroon. Na enkele weken was het gras weer hersteld en het werk verdwenen.

Sunflower cirkel

This circle of sown sunflowers is part of a study into artworks that transform, decay, and disappear. Slowly, a drawing emerges in the landscape. The circle—a symbol of ‘nothingness,’ emptiness, infinity, and absolute freedom.
